October 23rd through 27th
Keenoy’s Pups News October 27,
2017
Dear Families,
The weeks seem to be flying
by right now. It is hard for me to
believe that November is basically here! Friday folders will come home today, but the
work/study habit marks will not be included. I am using this weekend/Monday to start
working on progress reports, and need the sheets to enter work/study
habits. If I have any major concerns
this week, I will make sure to let you know.
I hope that each of the students
trick-or-treating on Tuesday have fun and stay safe.
Paxton Pride Awards
Each week, the class
nominates a classmate for this award.
The Paxton Pride Award represents a student who shows respect and
kindness towards others. The Pups
determine this selection by writing a brief paragraph about who and why they
think is deserving from our class. The
student who is nominated the most, earns the award. The first two recipients from our class were Hattie Hayes and Shamon White.
After reviewing the
nominations this week, I was inspired by our classroom kindness and community
that we have built. I then decided to
type each of the nominations to give to the students today. My thought is that even if they did not win,
I wanted them to know that their kindness is noticed by someone other than
myself. Congratulations to Lilly Martin for earning the award this
week and many other Pups who show great things each day.
Pup of the Week: Jackson Weathers
Hello, my name is Jackson and
I have one brother, and two sisters. My
favorite food is cheese and my favorite color is red. I play football and was born on November 7,
2016.
Next week…. Alex M.
Greatly Appreciated!
Thank you to the families
that planned, organized, donated, and attended our Fall party. Students always look forward to these
parties. Also, I really appreciate how
much you are supporting your child’s literacy this year. Our Scholastic order this month was nearly
$200.00! WOW and again….thank you!
Parent Teacher Conferences
In the Friday Folder you will
find your parent-teacher conference confirmation. Please let me know right away if you have a
conflict. Every attempt was made to
honor your request.
Math
Students took an assessment
on Unit 2 this Thursday. These will be
graded and returned to students next Tuesday.
I will share these assessments with you at conferences next week.
We are starting Unit 3 today.
This unit focuses on fractions (fraction concepts, addition, and subtraction of
fractions).
Writing
*Students continue to redraft
(start typing) their personal narrative stories for improvement.
*Students will complete a post-assessment
for this genre of writing.
*Writing pre-assessments and
their process piece will be shared during conferences.
*Our next genre of writing
will be informational.
Reading
We continued to focus on
inferring and using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown
words. I checked student reading
notebooks weekly and discovered that most students are doing a terrific job of
keeping up with reading notebook.
Nightly reading and notebook work is an expectation. Students and I reviewed the importance of
practicing these comprehension skills and keeping up with their reading
notebook work even though they are not checked every day.
Science – Earth/Space Systems
As you know, students took an
assessment today. Although they are not
completely graded, I am impressed at my first glance. I can already tell that students used the
entire week to study carefully. Thank
you for taking the time to sign the study guide each evening. Preparation and studying for tests like these
are skills that I feel will help students prepare for 6th grade. My own son Caleb is currently a 6th
grader at Smithton. He has experienced
several tests this year that are similar to this one.
Social Studies
We will complete our learning
about the New England, Southern, and Middle colonies in social studies chapters
5 and 6 next week. I will also introduce
Pre-Revolutionary War ideas towards the end of the week.
Word Study
Students took a pre-test over
common homophones. Words that were
missed became words to study during the week.
If students were successful spelling these words, students selected
words that they misspelled on previous homework assignments or from a more
challenging list of words. Students are
expected to study their words each week by taking their Look, Say, Cover,
Write, Check page home.
