Keenoy’s Pups News                                        3-2-18

Dear Families,
I’ve really enjoyed the nice weather this week and playing outside with the kids during extra recess.  Although Caleb’s soccer tournament in Booneville was a lot of fun last weekend, I’m looking forward to a more relaxing weekend at home with the family.  I’m also excited that I get to go to the Mizzou vs. Arkansas game on Saturday.  Hopefully Michael Porter Jr. will play and help us prepare for the NCAA Tournament later this month.  Go Tigers and Blues!

Fundraiser
The entire school is focusing on a fundraiser prior to Spring Break.  An informational letter explaining the process will be sent home today.

T-Shirt Design
Students will be able to create and vote for a 5th Grade T-Shirt design.  Once the design is selected, Diggit will be able to recreate this print for students to buy a t-shirt.  An informational page will be found in your child’s Friday folder.  We plan on selecting the design prior to Spring Break.

Keenoy Pup of the Week-Parker K.

Hello, my name is Parker.  I have one brother and a sister.  I am in love with sports and art.  The sports that I am playing now are basketball and baseball.  I also love to do math.  I moved to a different house about a year ago.  I have two dogs named Pinky and Dart.  I love going to school each day.

The next Pup of the Week is Bradley H.  Please bring any pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is located outside of our classroom.

Writing
This week we had terrific discussions about the similarities and differences between persuasive and argumentative writing.  Argumentative writing is more research based and is more respectful of the other point of view.  I also guided students through the process of writing an argumentative essay.  We will practice growing through this process with several argumentative ideas (as a class).  Thank you for taking time to discuss possible topics that be used during this writing cycle.  I enjoy when my own children involve me in their learning at school.

Inventions (Writing/Soc. Studies)
One of the argumentative ideas that I am going to have students focus on is an invention (between 1700-current) that had the most impact on the world.  The process will take a couple of weeks and will look like this:

*Students brainstorm a list of invention ideas after looking up information.
*Narrow down their long list to 3 inventions.
*Research information about the 3 inventions.
*Select 1 invention and create a brief argument about how the invention impacted the world.
*Each student presents this information to the class.
*The class votes on the top 2.
*Our class creates an iMovie for the 2 inventions.
*After spring break, 5th graders will watch the top videos and then will vote for

Reading
Students really seem to be enjoying the book, A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck.  The grandma from this story is mischievous but also caring and witty.  There have been several moments of laughter during this read aloud so far.  I will continue to model my thinking as I read each day and have students practice comprehension skills.
I gave the students a break from their written “Thinking Spots” this week.  I will ask students to pick back up with these written spots next week.

Word Study
Students were tested over their words on Thursday.  These were graded and returned to students today.  We will be focusing on words that have the ending sounds:  er, ar, ure next week.  Please look for these words in your child’s planner next week.  Quizzing your child from their word list is also very helpful.

 Science
We will continue focusing on Measuring and graphing quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.

Social Studies
Students will continue to learn about how the country grows in chapter 11.  These lessons focus on a) Industrial Revolution b) Immigration c) Texas and the Mexican War   d) Movement West-Gold
Rush

Math
We will complete Operations with Fractions in Unit 5 next week.  I’ve listed the main idea for each of the last lessons below.  After the completion of this unit, we will spend a couple of days reviewing and then take the assessment.
