Pups News 9-1-17
Dear
Families,
Have
an enjoyable holiday weekend! The Keenoy
family plans to spend some relaxing time together at home. The last several weekends have been extremely
busy, so I am very excited about staying home and doing chores around the
house. Wow….that just made me feel
really old.😊
Our
class is making progress in all areas and I am proud of their positive attitude
and cooperation. They are a very kind
group of 5th graders that get along with each other very well. Students are in
most of their curricular routines at this point.
Comet Carnival
Paxton
Keeley's biggest school fundraiser is closely approaching on October 6th! Each class is assigned a "game" to
run during the carnival that is from 5:00-8:00 pm. You don't have to supply or
make the game! You just show up and help "run" the game which for our
class is called "School House Toss".
Sign up times are organized by 30 min. slots. Please consider
volunteering a half hour of your time.
This
is a favorite event for our students and something that they look forward to
each year! Let's work together to make
this last Carnival for our class the best ever! Sign up early to get the time
slot you prefer! Your child can help you with your shift if you would like.
Here
is the sign up:
*I’ll also send
this link and information in an upcoming email
Fundraiser
I
hope you have seen your child's fundraising packet that was brought home on
Tuesday. We are excited to raise money for technology and teacher grants. Our
goal is to raise $20,000 for our school. The fundraiser will end Sept. 12th. My 4th grade daughter, Natalie is
excited that I agreed to walk around the subdivision with her this
weekend. She’s been practicing her sales
pitch and loves the idea of helping our school.
Please consider doing the same thing with your child, or your coworkers
might be interested in supporting your child’s school goal.
Ipads
Students
are learning our routines and rules with the iPads. This week, students took
the STAR math and reading test on their Ipad. They also downloaded the “My
Math” app to assist them with studying their basic multiplication facts. We will continue to use and download apps,
available to us, each week.
Math
*Students
are learning about finding the area of dimensions that use whole and fractional
numbers.
*Students
started exploring the concept of volume as they compared volumes of
3-dimensional objects.
*Next
week, students will use nonstandard and standard units to measure volumes of
rectangular prisms.
Reading
For
the last two weeks, I have been conferencing with students to get to know them
as readers. My lesson focus has been exploring different genres, helping
students make appropriate book selections, and reviewing reading notebook
expectations. I decided to postpone
reading notebook homework this week to ensure that each student understands
what quality reading responses look like.
Students will start their reading notebook homework next week.
As
you know, I’ve been giving the DRA 2s (reading assessments). These assessments
will be completed next week. After the
completion of these assessments, I will be able to design an individual reading
plan for each student and start meeting with small groups each day.
We
started reading the book, Jackie’s Wild Seattle, by Will Hobbs. I will be using this book to model my own
reading thinking each day. The shared
reading focus, with this book, will be Story Elements. I feel like these elements can be a solid
foundation for all other comprehension strategies. The story elements include: keeping track of
the setting, character traits (physical and personality), how characters change
throughout the story, and problems/solutions.
Writing
The
class is off to a great start with collecting ideas in their writer’s notebook. Students are collecting ideas for writing
their own personal narrative, which is our first writing unit. Next week we will continue collecting ideas
for this piece. Collecting strategies
that we will work on include writing about: special people in their life, moments at a
special place, first times, last times, and moments that they realized
something important. We will continue
with this work each day next week to prepare for our first draft.
