October 16th through 20th
Keenoy’s Pups News October 20, 2017
Dear Families,
I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend
without many activities planned. Thank you for all your continued support and I
really look forward to visiting with you at conferences. Have a wonderful week!
Pup of the Week:
Woodley Baggett
Hello, my name is
Woodley. I like to play basketball and I
also like to run track. In my family, I
have three sisters and a dog.
Parent Teacher Conferences
I will be sending home Parent
Teacher Conference confirmation times next Friday. Thank you for returning your request forms so
quickly this week.
Food Drive
Paxton Keeley’s annual food
drive begins on Monday, Oct. 21 and continues through Friday, Oct. 28. Donations of food items (no glass) are
greatly appreciated. Money donations (cash or check) are also appreciated.
Fall Party
Our Fall Party is Friday,
October 27. The party will begin at 2:15 and parents may begin setting up for
the party around 2:00. We will be outside at recess. Thank you to Rebecca Allen
for being our room parent coordinator and for organizing this party. Without
volunteers, these parties would not occur. For our new families to Paxton, students do not dress up in costumes on
this day.
Math
Our lessons this week focused
on solving and estimating large digit division problems. We also focused on how to interpret the
remainder depending on the context of the word problem.
On Monday, students will
complete a review in preparation for the unit test. I plan on having students take the Unit 2
assessment on Wednesday.
We will start unit 3 towards
the end of next week. This unit focuses on fractions (fraction concepts,
addition, and subtraction of fractions).
Writing
Revising and editing student
personal narratives continued this week. When students meet with me one-on-one,
I mentioned strengths and areas to work on.
Each student should leave a writing conference with a clear goal for
improving their next draft.
Together we developed a
recipe for a great ending and beginning.
Endings
A) Resolving problems
B) Teaching lessons learned
C) Make changes that tie back to the big meaning
of the story or beginning
D) Overall, why is this moment important to you?
Beginnings
A) Hint of a problem!
B) Info about main character…thoughts and
feelings
C) Create a mood….establish
setting
Reading
Students really seem to be
enjoying the story, Zach’s Lie by Roland Smith. This book forces the reader to make several
inferences and use the context to solve tough words. I have continued to model this thinking daily
during read aloud. Students should also
be practicing these skills during independent reading time. An area that we will continue working on is
supporting these ideas (especially inferences) with details directly from the
text. This is an area that stood out as
a weakness on the 4th grade Communication Arts MAP test last
year.
Science and Social Studies
As you know, I alternate
teaching these lessons each day. I did
not get as much accomplished with either as I had planned. We will continue learning about the New
England, Southern, and Middle colonies in social studies chapters 5 and 6.
We are nearing the end of our
space systems unit in science. I will be
sending home a study guide today. The
only lessons that we have not covered yet on the study guide are moon
phases. We will learn about these phases
next week. I plan to give the assessment
next Friday, which will give the students an entire week to study.
Word Study
We are entering our fourth
word study cycle. Students are expected
to take their spelling words home to study during the week. The test dates vary from week to week. My word study plan is based on a 5 day lesson
cycle, but there are days that we are not able to fit it into our
schedule.
