December 4th through 8th
Keenoy’s Pups News
December 8, 2017
Dear Families,
It is so hard for me to believe that we completed our first
week in December already! Although it
seems like the weeks are flying by, things have slowed down a bit for the
Keenoy family at home. Caleb’s soccer
season came to an end, so I am excited about relaxing weekends with the
family. I love that he is on a
competitive/successful team, but the traveling takes up a lot of time.
We hope you will be able to join us next Friday for our winter performance and open house. Students have been practicing their songs for several weeks now.
Keenoy Pup of the
Week-Henry S.
Hello, my name is Henry.
I live with my sister, mom, dad and two dogs. I love each of them very much. I really enjoy fishing and my favorite
fishing spot is Wall Lake. I like
catching bass, bluegill, and northern pike and I love Mr. Keenoy😊.....I promise that I did not pay him to say that!
Pup of the week on Monday-Sher S.
Please bring any pictures or items that you would like to
put on our bulletin board that is located outside of our classroom.
Winter
Performances/Open House
Mark your calendars for Paxton Keeley’s annual winter
performance and open house on Friday, December 15. Fifth grade choir begins singing in the gym
promptly at 1:05. Then, the entire 5th
grade takes the stage at 1:25 to sing.
Following the singing, feel free to join us in the room for an open
house from 1:45-2:00 This will be a
very busy day for Paxton Keeley. Our
parking lots and hallways will be full.
Be sure to arrive early as we begin singing promptly at the time
above. We only sing a few songs, so if
you are late you could miss the performance. Due to limited space in the gym,
students are not allowed to attend their siblings performances.
BizTown
This week we focused on financial literacy. We are learning about types of bank accounts,
how to fill out a bank application, how to write a check and deposit ticket,
and the differences between standard vs. direct deposits. As a class, we are really enjoying this unit.
Math
We completed Topic 3 on Tuesday and spent Wednesday and
Thursday reviewing concepts from the fraction unit. Students took an assessment today that will
be scored over the weekend. I feel confident
that they are prepared and will score well.
Our next unit will focus on Decimal and Coordinate Grid concepts.
Reading
We completed the book, Zach’s Lie this week. I’ve enjoyed our conversations and their deep
level of thinking shared during this book.
I decided to wait until this book is over before giving the assessment
over the skills: context clues, inferring, and predictions. This gave me a bit more time to meet with
students who needed extra support on a certain skill. Students will take a common assessment over
these comprehension skills next week.
Writing
Our focus on writing interesting paragraphs was successful. Students will apply this information learned
on our Photo-Speak project next week. Students
will research a person from the social studies book, plan their writing, and
develop a short report. We will then
connect this report to our Photo-Speak App that will be shared with you at our
Holiday Open House next Friday. The
class seems excited about using technology to bring their writing to “life.”
Next week students will also be introduced to their topics
for their informational reports. To keep with the spirit of the holiday season,
students will be researching about a charitable organization.
Word Study
This week students learned the plural rule with words ending
in y (changing y to i-adding es or just adding s) I noticed our class as a whole, commonly
misspelling these words.
Essay
essays=vowel before the y=just add s
Colony
Colonies=consonant before the y=change y to i and add es.
