April 30th through May 4th
Keenoy Pup’s News 5-4-18
Dear Families,
Thank
you so much for everything that you have done to support my teaching this
year. This is a tremendous group of
students and I will truly miss them. I’m
confident that they are prepared for Middle School and will continue being kind
citizens wherever they are. This will be
my last newsletter and Friday folder marks of the year. I will be preparing grades, entering competencies,
and writing third trimester comments for progress reports. If you have any further questions, please do
not hesitate to contact me. This is such
a busy time of year, so I tried to include all of the information that is
needed. In addition to the information
in this newsletter, you will also find other handouts with more specific information
in your child’s Friday folder. Have a
wonderful weekend!
Pup of the Week Gaon J.
Hello, my name is Gaon. I live with my sister, mother, and
father. My sister is in third grade at
Paxton Keeley. I am enjoying being in
the United States and learning English.
I am from South Korea and I moved to Columbia in December of 2017. I enjoy playing chess, violin, and
soccer. My classmates are nice and I
enjoy being in my class.
😊 We have celebrated each of our Pups this year! 😊
Chess Tournament
Students have really enjoyed
playing the chess app on their Ipad. I
have allowed them to access this app when they finish a task early, during
breaks, recesses, or at the end of the day.
Several students came to me with the idea of creating a Class Chess
Tournament. I decided to give the okay,
as long as I could participate with them😊 You’ll have
to ask your child what we decided our amazing chess tournament prize will
be. This will be another fun way for our
class to end the year together.
5th Grade Party
Please look for a letter in
your child’s Friday folder asking for a snack donation for the party. Thank you
for all of your donations throughout the year.
You have been very generous to our classroom.

Students will be turning in

Rock Bridge Field Trip May 11th (weather permitting)
I have included a reminder
checklist for this event in your child’s Friday folder. If we have heavy rain prior to the trip, (or
rain the day of) this event may have to be canceled due to path/water
conditions. A large portion of our hike
will be on dirt/grass/gravel paths that could potentially become too muddy. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we
continue to stay dry for another week.
5th Grade Graduation
*This event will be held at
Paxton in the gym on Tuesday, May 22 beginning at 9:00 am. The ceremony will
take approximately an hour and afterwards there will be time to take pictures
in front of the school.
*This is the last day of
school and is also a ½ day.
*Dismissal will be at 12:50
p.m. and you will have the option to take your child home after the graduation
ceremony.
*Students are expected to dress
nicely for this event.
Paxton Keeley Field Day
Our class is participating in
Field Day on May 16 from 10:20 am to 12:00 pm.
Coach is asking for two parent volunteers from our class to help run the
game station Hoop Squeeze. Our class
will begin field day with this station, so I will help you become familiar with
the game. Please send me an e-mail if
you are available to volunteer. Thanks
for considering volunteering your time.
Reading
Next week I will continue
meeting with individuals, small groups, and administering the DRA2.
Math
Next week in Unit 7 students
will:
*Analyze patterns and rules
in table of values, create graphs to represent the data, and answer questions
using rules, table, and graphs.
*Use rules, tables, and
graphs to compare real-world relationships and solve problems.
*Identify relationships
between patterns, graph ordered pairs from corresponding terms of patterns, and
use the graphs to analyze a real-world phenomenon (predicting Old Faithful's
eruptions).
Health
This week, and for the next
two weeks, we are learning about nutrition. Next week we will also be learning
about making healthy choices for our bodies.
Argumentative Writing
Next week, students will
complete their first and second draft of their opinion/argumentative piece of
writing. The topic that they have been
researching is Traditional School Calendar Schedules vs. Year-Long Calendar
Schedules. I’ve let them select either
this topic or whether chocolate milk should be allowed in schools. Our lessons will continue to focus on
utilizing evidence to support our thinking, using powerful statistics and/or
quotes, and introductions
